Preparing for Career Success

How Education Mentoring Helps You Prepare for Career Success

Mentoring is crucial for student success. Every student needs positive role models to help guide them through the challenges they will face, both in school and in life. Some students may lack emotional or educational support in their environment, while others may be the first in their families to go to college or graduate high school. To support them, HEF provides education mentoring for students in Hillsborough County schools. Mentors provide students with much-needed motivation and accountability.

The Impact of Mentoring on Student Success

A student success mentor serves as a trustworthy role model who provides invaluable guidance and emotional support in a student’s life. A mentor is a caring, committed adult who can give the greatest gift of just a few hours each month and share life experiences with a student in our mentoring program.

Studies show that students with a mentor are:

  • 27% less likely than their peers to start drinking.
  • 55% more likely to be enrolled in college than students who also face an opportunity gap but do not have a mentor.
  • 52% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school.
  • 37% less likely than their peers to skip class.
  • 81% more likely to participate regularly in sports or extracurricular activities than peers who do not have a mentor.
  • 46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs.

HEF’s Take Stock In Children Program

Take Stock in Children breaks the cycle of poverty by identifying high-achieving, low-income public-school students with college potential and offering them holistic support. Through this program, HEF provides a volunteer mentor devoted to supporting a student’s academic and future success, continuous involvement from skilled student advocates who engage in educational and career counseling, and the opportunity for a 2-year college scholarship upon program completion and graduation.

Take Stock in Children scholars sign a contract promising to remain crime and drug-free, maintain a 2.5 GPA and above, exhibit good behavior, and meet with their assigned mentor regularly through high school graduation.

Why Mentoring is Essential for Career Success

Education mentoring is more than just providing academic support; it is about preparing students for life and career success. Mentors help students set realistic and achievable goals, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and build confidence. These skills are not only critical for academic success but will serve them in the workplace and within their relationships.

Mentors can also provide networking opportunities and career guidance, as well as give students insights into various professions and industries. This exposure helps students make informed decisions about their career paths and understand the steps needed to achieve their professional goals.
