HEF Take Stock Mentee Receives Housing Scholarship

Hillsborough Education Foundation’s Take Stock in Children mentoring program offers students a caring volunteer mentor who is committed to the development of their potential, as well as a HEF College Success Coach and access to scholarships.

Recently, Suncoast Credit Union recognized Armwood High School student and TSIC mentee, Daisy, with a scholarship that will cover a full academic year of housing at one of Florida’s 40 public colleges and universities. Her school of choice? The University of South Florida!

Daisy is one out of only ten students across the state to receive the Suncoast Credit Union/Take Stock in Children Housing Scholarship and could not believe the good news when Suncoast Credit Union, HEF and her mentor surprised her at school.

“Daisy is incredibly deserving of this award,” said Kourtney Berry, Suncoast Credit Union Foundation Executive Director, who was at Armwood High to help present the award and expressed how happy the credit union is to partner with TSIC to provide this kind of relief to students.

For Daisy, this scholarship has made her feel more confident in selecting USF as her school of choice.

“I’m really grateful because, without this scholarship, I can’t afford the housing costs,” Daisy said.

“It means a lot because I don’t have to worry about transportation. And this scholarship will help me stay focused because I’ll have my own study area.”

HEF is so proud of Daisy, along with her mentor and College Success Coach for encouraging her to apply for this scholarship, and thankful to Suncoast Credit Union and TSIC for making awards like this available to our incredible mentees.

“We couldn’t do our work without Suncoast Credit Union, the state Take Stock in Children program and their commitment to students,” said HEF CEO Kim Jowell. She went on to share that the impact our volunteer mentors have on students is invaluable.
